When you are arrested for a DWI, there are a few things that the officer is going to ask you to do before he either lets you go or takes you into the station. One thing that the officer will most likely do is to check your BAC level with a breathalyzer machine.
The standard issued machine right now is the Intoxilyzer 5000. The science of this machine is actually really complicated for the size of the equipment. The machine checks your breath for two different types of alcohol on two different wavelengths. By doing this, it helps to measure your BAC a lot more accurately so that there are not wrong calculations before the arrest happens. The Intoxilyzer 5000 uses a three filter method to measure the alcohol content. By using this method, it helps to decipher between a small amount of alcohol and a larger amount of alcohol in your system.
The Intoxilyzer 5000 is currently used in 35 of the 50 states. Eventually the other states will choose to use this smart piece of equipment as well. It started with just 5 or 6 states using the machine and then slowly spread to the many states that we have now. Although the earlier models weren’t as advanced as they are today, they have all come a long way in the last few years.
